How to exterminate winter pests

Unwelcome visitors such as flies, fleas, cockroaches and rats can put your family’s health at risk and cause damage to the structure of your home and your belongings. Although one may believe that the solution to these pests is in a can of supermarket pesticide, in the long run it is always more cost effective and successful if you call in the professionals.

Pests will not go away by their own, and the sooner one acts – the sooner and most cost effectively the problem will be eradicated.

No home is 100% pest-free, especially during winter when pests such as fleas, rats and mice invade your home in search of warmth and food.  Flea cocoons can lie dormant during summer when there are fewer animals or humans in the house to supply them with food, and can then spring to life once the weather changes and we start spending more time indoors.

Whilst fleas are less active and lay dormant in winterBabies and children are at higher risk from being bitten by fleas particularly when playing on the floor. They also tend to be more sensitive than adults to flea bites.

During winter, rats and mice come in doors for the warmth. German cockroaches (the smaller ones) always like warm humid places (American cockroaches are the larger ones and prefer drains), so kitchens, especially busy restaurant kitchens, are ideal for them. Fleas usually become less active and lie dormant in the winter months until temperatures and humidity rises. Overseas where there is central heating, the artificial warm environment can allow the fleas to remain active in winter. They also go dormant when there are no hosts, and can lie dormant for up to a year.

Simply vacuuming will not eradicate a flea infestation, as the fleas jump to avoid the vacuum-cleaner. Although good housekeeping does have a role to play in controlling fleas in the home, as flea-larvae feed on organic matter in carpets or bedding. Whilst supermarket flea control products may be effective in getting rid of fleas in the short run, an established flea infestation would require professional treatment.

Rodents also pose high risk to humans and are known to spread serious infections such as Salmonella, Weil’s disease, E.coli, Tuberculosis and Hantavirus by leaving infected urine or faeces in places with which people are likely to have contact, such as kitchen counters, food preparation areas and storage areas and rubbish bins. Anybody who has ever had a rat or mouse in their home, whether as a pet or unwelcome visitor, will know that they chew all day long.

Those who have had them as unwelcome visitors know how much they like chewing wiring and whatever else expensive they can find.

Service Master / Pestkill will find and treat the source of the problem, rather than just the symptoms. The pesticides used by Service Master / Pestkill are all approved by the local Department of Agriculture. Edwin Fuhri has a certificate in GREEN PEST CONTROL.

Edwin Fuhri is offering all readers a FREE Roof inspection to find pests such as the feared borer.

If you have a company that deals with food, Service Master / Pestkill can also assist you with an IPM (integrated pest management) program. We supply all supporting documents for audits (and we conduct mini audits too to ensure your compliance). This will be done by Edwin Fuhri, who has qualified as a Field Pest Biologist specialising in pest control for the food industry.

Ask about microbial disinfection treatments: Microbial disinfection treatments are perfect for winter when everyone stays indoor and more people get sick. Service Master / Pestkil can sanitize your office or school, which effectively kilsl viruses, bacteria, mould spores and dust mite. Edwin will be able to give you more information on this.

We also provide Biokill treatments, which are literally safer than table salt to humans. Perfect for creches, old age homes, offices, hospitals, etc
