Three cannibalism suspects off the hook for now

JOHANNESBURG – The Estcourt Magistrate court in KwaZulu Natal has provisionally withdrawn charges against three of the seven men suspected for Cannibalism.

On Thursday the court said there is insufficient evidence to prosecute the three men. However the matter will remain subject to investigation and should sufficient evidence surface, charges against them maybe re-instated.

It then adjourned the matter for 27 October for bail application for the remaining four accused.

The accused had originally opted to abandon bail application back in August. They face counts including murder, conspiracy to commit murder and possession of human parts. One of the suspects handed himself over to police, telling them he was tired of eating human flesh.

He then led police to a house where they allegedly found human body parts leading to imminent arrests.

South Africa has no direct law against cannibalism, but mutilating a corpse and being in possession of human tissue are criminal offences.
